Greek Movie Days, 2026

This year’s Greek Film Days in Stockholm are dedicated to Pantelis Voulgaris, one of Greece’s most acclaimed and influential film directors and a leading figure of the New Greek Cinema movement. The programme is organized by the Swedish Institute at Athens, the Greek Cultural House Foundation and the Women’s Section of the Greek Association in Stockholm.

The retrospective opens at the Greek Cultural House on Saturday, 10 October 2026 at 6:30 pm, with a talk by Rea Walldén, who will explore Voulgaris’ work and his place in Greek cinema. The evening will also mark the opening of the photography exhibition “Women”, featuring a selection of photographs from Voulgaris’ films by Giorgos Arvanitis, one of Greece’s leading cinematographers. On loan from the Chania Film Festival, the exhibition offers a visual journey through some of the female characters and stories that have shaped Voulgaris’ cinema.

The retrospective continues at Zita Folkets Bio with three Sunday screenings on 11, 18 and 25 October 2026 at 5:00 pm. The programme spans Voulgaris’ career, from the short film Jimmy the Tiger (1966) and Anna’s Engagement (1972) to Brides (2004) and The Last Note (2017).

Voulgaris is renowned for his deeply human approach to storytelling and his ability to place individual lives against the backdrop of modern Greek history.
