The Swedish Institute at Athens is a research and educational institution. It focuses on the archeology and history of ancient Greece and both conducts its own field archaeological campaigns and host other collaborative projects. The Institute however welcomes and assists scholars from Swedish universities of all disciplines who need to work in Greece. It furthermore functions as a link between Greek authorities and Swedish researchers who wish to pursue scientific studies that demand permits from the Greek Ministry of Culture, and also assist international researchers who wish to study finds from Swedish excavations in Greece.

As part of its research activities, the Swedish Institute at Athens runs regular seminar and lecture series. It organizes and hosts conferences and workshops on various topics, although mainly events concerning aspects of ancient Greek civilization. The Institute moreover gives scholarships to postgraduate students or scholars at Swedish universities (or Swedish scholars working outside of Sweden) who wish to conduct studies in Greece.
