Description

Starting in the mid-18th century, Swedish scholars began to travel to Greece in quest of different goals: to find the remnants of classical antiquity, to request manuscripts, to study the flora, or to conduct linguistic research.

Some of these travelers, such as Jacob Jonas Björnståhl (1731-1779) and Adolf Fredrik Sturtzenbecker (1757-1783), have left us invaluable records, which have only been partly published. Their travel journals comprise enlightening material about the monasteries of Meteora; the many ancient ruins of Greece; the manuscripts they found; the inhabited areas and their anthropogeography; and, the circumstances, customs, and traditions of the Greek people. Their works, along with those of many other travelers from Western and Central Europe of that time, rekindled interest in Greece in the critical decades before the Greek Revolution.

The lecture aspires to present 18th-century Greece through the eyes of these Swedish travelers and their written texts, which remain until today a precious source of knowledge about a transformative and important period of modern Greek history.

The Lecture will be held in Swedish
