Water has often been viewed as necessary for Greek and Roman religion. The aim of the workshop is therefore to explore various facets of water usage within Greek and Roman cults. What role did water play in religious life, who used it, when and for what? In order to approach this, six papers focusing on different aspects are presented, ranging from water cults in Thrace and Macedonia and how water usage affected, and was in turn affected by, the physical layout of ritual sites, to the use of water in libations and Roman mortuary practices.
The workshop takes place as a hybrid event, November 15, 2022, 16.00–20.00 (Athens time), physically at the Swedish Institute at Athens and digitally on Zoom. Please register at conferences.sia.gr for participation. For further information, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
