The Swedish Institute at Athens is sad to announce that our long-term collaborator Erik Hallager passed away on August 18, 2024. Erik Hallager was an expert on Minoan archaeology and scripts. He took over as field director for the Swedish part of the Greek-Swedish excavations in Khania in 1973, and continued working within the project until this year, also in his capacity of Director of the Danish Institute at Athens and professor of Classical archaeology at Aarhus University 2004-2007. Erik Hallager’s work at Khania and especially Kastelli, is of seminal importance for our knowledge about Minoan society and includes, apart from the running series of monographs presenting the results of the The Greek-Swedish Excavations at the Ag. Aikaterini Square, Kastelli, Khania (1997-), such prominent publications as The Master Impression. A Clay Sealing from the Greek-Swedish Excavations at Kastelli, Khania (1985) and The Minoan Roundel and Other Sealed Documents in the Neopalatial Linear A Administration (1996). We remember Erik with gratitude, as a truly valued friend and colleague. Our thoughts go to his wife Birgitta, also an esteemed colleague and collaborator at Khania, Mattias and Andreas.
